PV Solar Panels: Your Questions Answered

As one of Dublin’s most established installers of PV solar panels, we know all too well some of the questions clients have before installing solar panels in their homes. It’s a big investment, so homeowners naturally want to learn as much as possible before scheduling an installation. To make this information more accessible, we’ve collected some of the most common questions below.

What is PV in solar panel

PV in solar panels stands for Photovoltaic.

Photovoltaic cells are the heart of solar panels. They are made of semiconductor materials (typically silicon) that convert sunlight directly into electricity. When sunlight strikes the photovoltaic cells, it excites the electrons in the material, causing them to flow and generate an electric current.

How much electricity does a solar PV panel generate?

The amount of electricity a solar PV panel generates depends on several factors:

  • Panel size and efficiency: Larger, more efficient panels produce more power.

  • Sunlight intensity: Stronger sunlight leads to more power generation.

  • Panel orientation and tilt: Optimal angles maximise sunlight exposure.

  • Weather conditions: Clouds, rain, and snow reduce output.

  • Shade: Any shading can significantly reduce power generation.

Under ideal conditions, our residential solar panels can produce between 250 and 400 watts of power. However, the actual output can vary significantly based on the abovementioned factors.

How do PV solar panels differ from other solar panels?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are distinct from other types primarily in their function and the energy they produce.

  • PV panels directly convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect.

  • Other types of solar panels primarily focus on capturing heat from sunlight. These include:

    • Solar thermal panels: These panels use a fluid (often water or oil) to absorb heat from the sun, which can then be used for heating or hot water.

    • Concentrated solar power (CSP) systems use mirrors or lenses to focus sunlight onto a central point, heating a fluid that can generate steam to drive turbines.

What do you charge to install a PV Solar Panel on a residential property?

Various factors go into how we price a PV solar panel installation, including the location of your property and the size of the building. We are fully committed to offering our clients the lowest price possible without ever compromising the quality of our craftsmanship. Call us now, and we can work out a no-obligation PV Solar panel installation quote.
